Residents of Aleto community in Eleme, Rivers State, were thrown into shock on Friday, October 2, after a pastor, Deacon Steve Eyo, suddenly collapsed and died while preaching at a funeral service.
Eyo, an officiating minister at the funeral and a resident pastor of the Redeemed Christian Church of God in the area, was reportedly delivering a sermon titled “The Certainty of Death and Hope Beyond” when the incident occurred.
According to eyewitnesses, the cleric told mourners that death was certain and could not be avoided, adding that everyone would eventually experience it.
He reportedly compared death to going to the market, explaining that while some people leave the market early and others stay until late, people also die at different times.
The pastor was quoted as saying that “death can come when we least expect it.”
However, about 15 minutes into his sermon, Eyo suddenly collapsed, causing his microphone to fall to the floor with a loud sound.
Some mourners initially thought the incident was part of his illustration about the suddenness of death, given the subject of his sermon. They soon realised that he was in serious distress.
He was taken to the back of the church, where the choir and other ministers gathered around him and prayed, while people with medical knowledge reportedly administered first aid.
A medical personnel later indicated that the pastor had stopped breathing, prompting his immediate transfer to the nearest hospital.
Eyo was rushed to the hospital in the same ambulance that had been hired to transport the remains of the deceased whose funeral he was attending.
He was subsequently confirmed dead at the hospital and his body was taken to the mortuary.
